01Pick one niche and one town at a time
“Businesses that need SEO” is everyone, which makes it no one. Start with one service in one town: appliance repair in Sherman Oaks, say, or chiropractors in Brampton. A narrow list lets you write one sentence that is true for every business on it.
The replies we received in August 2026 came from appliance repair, screen printing, chiropractic, martial arts, waterproofing, roofing, transportation, psychology, solar, grocery retail, architecture and immigration services. None of those campaigns targeted “small businesses”. Each one targeted a trade in a place.
02Find the businesses missing from page one
Search the way their customers do: the service plus the town. Whoever is missing from page one and the map results is losing calls to the names above them, and can check that for themselves in ten seconds. That makes them your list.
- Search “[service] [town]” in a private window, so your own history doesn't shape the results.
- Note who appears in the map results and the first ten listings.
- List the businesses with a website and a phone number that appear in neither.
- Keep the business name, the owner's name if the site shows it, the email on the site, the phone number and the exact search you checked.
03Write about one problem they can check
The emails that got replies all did the same three things: named the business, named the search it is missing from, and offered a short breakdown of why. No pitch, no price and no links in the first email.
Subject lines were short, lower-case and personal, the kind a colleague sends: “a quick question for [business]”, “something I noticed for [business]”, “ideas on [business]”. You can see them in the subject lines of the replies on our homepage.
- What you noticed: “[Business] isn't showing on the first page for [service] in [town].”
- Why it matters: the businesses above them get those calls.
- What you'll send: a short breakdown of what is holding them back.
- One question: “Can I send it over?”
04What the replies look like
When it works, people don't write “tell me more”. They ask about price, scope or next steps. These came in August 2026, word for word, typos included:
Ok, how much will it cost?
Sure including all costs please
Yes Do I have To update my website as well and if not what is the total cost for SEO
You can send, though I know my website needs help and it is why I am not getting the front page.
We sort replies into three kinds: asked the price, asked for the breakdown, and wanted to keep talking. Only replies that show interest count as leads; a “no”, a “stop” or an out-of-office never does.
05Answer the question they asked
The appliance repair owner in Sherman Oaks asked for “what is included, monthly cost, any setup fee, and the contract length”, then added “Email only, calls don't work for me.” Send exactly that, in one email. An answer to the question beats a booking link.
- Reply the same day. Interest that took an email to spark cools quickly.
- If they asked for a price, lead with it, or with a range and what moves it.
- Send the breakdown you promised, specific to their search and their town.
- Offer a call once, and don't make it a condition.
06Keep it steady, not a burst
Clients stay when leads keep arriving. Our longest-running SEO agency client has had 373 deliveries in 23 months, about four a week and never more than 6 days apart. Run outreach every week rather than one big campaign a quarter, and your pipeline stops lurching between feast and famine.
07Keep a stop list and follow the rules
Every email needs a way to opt out, and anyone who says no or asks you to stop goes on a do-not-contact list for good. The rules differ by country: CAN-SPAM in the US, PECR in the UK, CASL in Canada and the Spam Act 2003 in Australia. Check the ones for the countries you email before you send.
08Do it yourself, or buy the replies
Everything above works, and it is a job: building lists, writing, sending, sorting replies and staying inside the rules takes hours every week. If you'd rather spend those hours on sales calls, we run the outreach and deliver the replies, exclusive to you, at a price per lead. See how our SEO leads work.
